I have so much energy, and it’s because of all these life changes I’ve made with Livongo.SANDY STOECKEL Livongo Member
Her passion is music, and in her spare time, she conducts a community concert band. Thanks to Livongo, Sandy now has the mental and physical energy she needs to get through her busy day and do the things she loves.
I’m from St. Louis, Missouri. I have a wonderful husband, two beautiful boys and a dog named Ziggy. For the last 30 years, I have worked in mortgage banking. I love what I do, but my real passion is music. I knew I wanted to be a conductor ever since I saw Ron Howard get a golden trumpet in the musical the ‘Music Man.’ About 30 years ago, I founded an 80-piece community band that plays throughout the St. Louis and St. Charles County area. We have been together now for 32 years and play in nearly 25 concerts each year. I am one busy lady.
When I was pregnant with my children, I had gestational diabetes. I was warned that when that happens there is a likelihood that within five to 10 years, you will be diagnosed with diabetes yourself. That’s exactly what happened. About 12 years after my first son was born, I developed Type 2 Diabetes.
I was bad at it. I would eat what and whenever I wanted. Food was one of the only places where I had control. By being restricted, I felt like that was being taken away from me and that didn’t set well. My doctor finally put me on medication, but I wasn’t taking it seriously. When I had a big meal, I would take the pill and think that was the quick fix. My blood sugars were out of control. One day, I was at my doctor’s office for a regular appointment, and she told me that I was going to have to go on insulin.
I freaked out. I had a panic attack and total meltdown in her office. It was very emotional for me. I don’t do well with needles. Even in the beginning stages I couldn’t prick my own finger to test. I would have to drive to wherever my husband was camping on the weekend, whether it was 20 minutes away or two hours away since I can’t do it myself.
I heard about Livongo through my corporation and immediately decided to take advantage of it. When I first ordered the equipment, it didn’t take long to get the supplies and the meter. Once I started using it, I was amazed at everything that this meter could do. It gives me my reading, stores my data in the cloud to show my doctor and provides immediate support if my number is too high or low. Little helpful hints make it personalized for me. This was finally the meter that had come into the 21st century.

I’ve come a long way with testing. It used to be hard to just do once a day, since I don’t like blood, but now I’m doing it three or four times a day. I’ve also made a change in my diet and exercise. Being so busy, I didn’t make time for breakfast, lunch or snacks and would come home after work to pig out. Now, I’m eating six small meals a day, and that has changed my blood sugar control throughout the day. In the past six months, between the exercise and the diet, I’ve lost 30 pounds. My blood sugars are now in a healthy range. I’ve also seen my A1c go from 8.9 down to 6.2.
I feel fantastic. I have so much more energy than I have ever had in my life, as far back as I can remember.
It took a while at first, and I had to set goals. I am one of those kind of people that if I make a promise, I’m going to follow through on the promise. I talked to my Livongo coach Toby Smithson, and we talked about how many times a day we should check. I made that goal with Toby, and I was able to stick with it. We talked about the diet plan that I was on and how that would assist me. Livongo has truly changed my life.
I feel fantastic. I have so much more energy than I have ever had in my life, as far back as I can remember. I couldn’t be more happy with the success that I’ve had as a result of this total program. I absolutely love it.
